Oxygen Evaluation Q & A

What is an oxygen evaluation?

During your oxygen evaluation, your respiratory specialist evaluates your oxygen levels during rest, activity, and sleep to determine the type of long-term oxygen therapy that will most benefit you.

After gathering the necessary information, your physician makes recommendations to improve your respiratory health and quality of life. Often, that includes a combination of supplemental oxygen, healthy lifestyle changes, and prescription medication.

Who can benefit from an oxygen evaluation?

Request an oxygen evaluation if you’re living with a chronic respiratory condition like:

  • Bronchiectasis
  • Chronic lung disease
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Interstitial lung disease
  • Pulmonary hypertension

You might also benefit from an oxygen evaluation if you have sarcoidosis or chronic bronchitis.

What does an oxygen evaluation involve?

Fivestar Pulmonary Associates tailors oxygen evaluations to each patient’s needs. Usually, that includes:

Pulse oximetry

Pulse oximetry is a noninvasive test that measures the amount of oxygen in your blood. During your oxygen evaluation, your Fivestar Pulmonary Associates physician assesses your blood oxygen levels during rest and physical activity. They might also ask you to take a nap to monitor your oxygen levels during sleep.

The results of your pulse oximetry readings help your physician determine if you can benefit from supplemental oxygen.

Blood gas test

A blood gas test is used to check how your lungs are working to determine whether they can effectively exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide.

Long-term oxygen therapy assessment

A long-term oxygen therapy assessment is a set of tests meant to determine whether the levels of oxygen in your blood are low enough to need oxygen therapy.

Laboratory testing

If these tests don’t provide enough information about your respiratory health, your physician might also order blood work or chest X-rays.

How long does an oxygen evaluation take?

Most oxygen evaluations take 60 minutes or less*. If your physician wants to monitor your blood oxygen levels during sleep, it might take a bit longer.
